Leatherman, founded by Oregon native Tim Leatherman, originated from a practical need during a budget trip to Europe in 1975. Faced with leaky hotel plumbing and a desire for versatile tools, Tim conceived the idea of a pliers-based, multi-purpose tool. Despite facing numerous rejections, Tim's unwavering perseverance led to the creation of the first Leatherman tool, the Pocket Survival Tool (PST), in 1983. With 13 different functions, the PST exceeded expectations, selling over one million units in its first decade. Leatherman's commitment to innovation and quality is still upheld today at their Portland, Oregon facility, where all tools are manufactured and rigorously tested in the diverse landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.
