Frequently asked questions about fishing reels

What are the best brands of fishing reels? Our online fishing store is packed with the biggest brands in the world of fishing. We believe in purchasing brands that are trusted, innovative & not only provide great products but great after-sales service. That’s why we work closely with the likes of Shimano, Daiwa, Okuma, Penn, Accurate & more.
Should I buy a spin reel or an overhead reel? This is a question for the ages. Our opinion is in a generalized sense that spin reels provide the most versatility across more forms of fishing. That being said if you are looking for specialized reel such as electric reel or game reel then we strongly suggest overhead.
Can I service my own fishing reel? When considering servicing your reel please be aware that you will avoid the manufacturer’s warranty on any reels that are opened by unauthorized servicers. Due to the complexity of the reel components and the strict processes followed it’s always best to allow authorized reel services to service your fishing reels.
How much drag do I need in my fishing reel? It’s important to match the drag on your reel with two things. Firstly, the breaking strain of the braid you are using on your reel. For example, using 50lb braid on a bait caster with 12lb of drag will not only void the warranty but downscale the performance. Secondly, the recommended weight rating on your fishing rod. Matching these as best as you can will improve performance & ensure all warranties are maintained.
What’s the best fishing reel for softbaiting? There are two great options for soft baiting reels. The most popular are spinning reels between the sizes of 2500 & 4000 and the second is a baitcasting reel paired with a slightly longer baitcasting rod. The most versatile soft baiting options are 3000 on a 7ft 10-inch rod. Check out our selected combos here.
How do I choose the best fishing reel for me? Our first recommendation is to identify the form of fishing you wish to perform. You can match these with our reel or combo categories on the website. For example, game reels, softbaiting reels etc.. The next best option is to check out our buying guide to buying the best fishing reels in NZ.
What are the three main types of fishing reels? The three main types of fishing reels are spinning reels, overhead reels & baitcasting reels. Of course, you can add to these electric reels which have become increasingly popular in recent years. Within these types of reels you will find everything you need to tackle your next fishing adventure.
How much do I need to spend on a good fishing reel? Finding value for money in fishing reels is easy at Land & Sea. We don’t necessarily think you need to spend $1000 on a reel to catch your dream fish. Jump into our buying guide here to run through the best options at each price point.
What are the best fishing reels for surf casting? Surf reels are specifically designed to provide long casting distances from the shorelines of NZ. Key features of surf reels include long cast spools, generally are 8000 size or larger & must have good waterproofing technology. As a great place to start, browse our Okuma Surf reels for high-quality & reliable options.
Can I buy a left-hand fishing reel? Absolutely. Most manufacturers generally provide us with access to left-hand reels. Although not overly popular we do purchase the odd left-hand reel. If you don’t see it available on our website please feel free to enquire with our customer service team & we will endeavor to order the reel in which you are after. See contact details here.
